VISITING
by Jennifer Helgerson
it's been seven years
since I’ve visited my father
I’m married now
with kids of my own

greeted at the airport
I sit in the backseat
looking out the window
when I hear it start

Dad speaks to his wife
with contempt in his voice
he belittles and berates her
for her map reading skills

it’s shockingly familiar
I can’t believe I forgot
it’s so vastly different
from my husband and me

shame wells up inside
I know I should protest
instead I sit in silence
and wish I hadn’t come
